AVAKAS GORGE LOOP NATURE TRAIL

Avakas Gorge Loop Nature Trail offers an in-depth exploration of one of the Paphos district's most treasured natural wonders—Avakas Canyon. Unlike the linear trail, this particular route is a loop, providing a more varied and comprehensive experience. As you hike, you'll venture deep into Avakas Gorge, reaching the end of the canyon before ascending out of the gorge and following a path that runs above it. This route eventually leads you back to the starting point at the parking lot, creating a full-circle journey that showcases the area's diverse landscapes.
One of the key advantages of this loop trail is that you don't have to retrace your steps within the gorge itself. Instead, after enjoying the rugged beauty of the canyon, you’re treated to a scenic climb that offers panoramic views of the surrounding Paphos district and the sparkling Mediterranean Sea. The trail's difficulty can vary significantly, largely depending on the season and the water levels in the Avgas River, which flows through the Avakas Gorge. During wetter months, the river may swell, making sections of the trail more challenging, while in drier months, the path is easier to navigate.

This loop trail is perfect for those who want to experience the full grandeur of Avakas Canyon, from its dramatic gorge to the scenic viуцы above, providing an unforgettable adventure in one of Cyprus’s most beautiful natural settings.

What to expect from the trail
  • We would not advise visiting this trail in rainy seasons, especially just after heavy rains, as the small stream of Avgas River becomes strong, flooding the majority of the trail.
  • The easiest time to master this route is the end of August to mid-October, when it has not rained in Cyprus for a long time.
  • The part of the trail the above the Canyon has no shade, thus it gets really hot under the sun.
  • Inside the gorge, it is cooler than outside by a few degrees, and it is mostly shady.
  • The route in the gorge goes over slippery boulders and you have a huge chance of getting your shoes soaked from stepping into the cold stream.
  • There are picnic tables, benches and public toilets near the parking at the beginning of the route. Sometimes, even a food truck comes there.
  • At the end of the gorge, you will see steps that lead up the canyon to a view overlooking the entire Avakas Gorge. There are benches for you to rest on before your journey back. For the location pin, click here.
  • It is a very popular route so don't expect to be there alone.
  • Don't forget to look up to see wild mountain goats on steep walls of the canyon!
