TROZENA ABANDONED VILLAGE NATURE TRAIL

The Trozena Hiking Trail is a pleasant circular route that passes through the abandoned village of Trozena, a small forest, a river gorge with flowing water, and viewpoints over the nearby village of Gerovasa, which is also uninhabited. Trozena and Gerovasa, located between Limassol and Paphos, formed a shared community where Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots lived together peacefully. From the 1960s onward, both villages experienced gradual depopulation, and by 2001 they had no residents. Today, the area has a distinctive atmosphere, with abandoned and partially ruined houses still containing personal items such as clothes, tableware, and furniture. Highlights along the trail include views of the Diarizos valley, the winter waterfall, the Trozena Bridge, and the only fully surviving building in the village, the Church of St. George. In 2026, Trozena village is undergoing restoration, including the construction of a café and workshop, improved trail maintenance, and the development of additional tourist infrastructure.

What to expect from the trail
  • The trail is open year-round.
  • It is most beautiful from November to April, as the Diarizos River dries up in summer.
  • There is a waterfall along the trail that can be seen during the rainy season.
  • This route is new as of 2026 and is likely to become popular.
  • You’ll find picnic tables near the river along the path.
  • Restrooms are available at the trailhead.
  • There are no signs marking the trail, but the route is obvious without them.
  • We recommend hiking the trail clockwise because there is a steep ladder without handrails—it is safer to go up than down.
  • The views are spectacular; take a detour to admire Trozena Bridge, which was built by the British and is an example of a Bailey iron bridge. For the location pin, click here.

Suggestions to enhance your experience
  • If you are traveling from Paphos, the Rock of Chasampoulion lies directly along your route. If you are coming from Limassol, it is well worth adding an extra 15 minutes to your journey to stop there. Two massive rocks narrow the road into a tight passage, once making it an ideal spot for an ambush. In the 19th century, three brothers used this location to attack, rob, and kill passers-by. Today, it is a peaceful area and a popular spot for climbers. For the location pin, click here.
  • Set in the quiet village of Dora, Throne of the Virgin Mary is a spiritual landmark. The site is surrounded by nature and has a calm and serene atmosphere that reflects the strong religious traditions of the area. Dora itself is a charming village with beautiful mountain views. Keep in mind that reaching the throne involves a steep uphill climb, but the scenery along the way makes the effort worthwhile. For the location pin, click here.
  • Drive 15 minutes till you reach Omodos, a charming old village, known for its cobbled streets, stone-built houses, and rich winemaking tradition. Highlights include the Monastery of Timios Stavros, which houses relics like the piece from the Holy Rope with which Christ was tied upon the Cross, a Medieval wine press, and many local wineries. Explore the village square, boutiques, and museums dedicated to icons and narrow-knit lacing. Enjoy traditional Cypriot dishes and local wine at its taverns, or experience live music and dancing on Friday and Saturday nights. With its blend of history, culture, and lively atmosphere, Omodos is a perfect destination for visitors. For the location pin, click here.
